Digitization of Finding Aids for Audio Collection
(C-L-07C-01) Support for the creation of a digital finding aid for Bishop Museum’s Archives audio collection, which illustrates nearly sixty years’ worth of Native Hawaiian oral tradition. The vast majority of Hawaiians recorded in this collection were born and raised in the 19th century, making this a valuable and unique source of ethnographic knowledge. A website dedicated to the audio collection for use by researchers and the general public will also be developed.

PUBLICATION

Unequal Hawai‘i: Ethnicity and Inequality in the Isles of Aloha (publication)               
(Z-L-07C-04) In his book, Dr. Jonathan Okamura analyzes the mechanisms that contribute to the maintenance of inequality among the various ethnic groups in Hawai‘i, dispelling the   notion of Hawai‘i as a racial paradise. A public program to share key research and scholarship will be conducted by Dr. Okamura on O‘ahu.

Fourteenth Biennial Conference on Literature and Hawai‘i’s Children
(R-H-07C-05) A two and a half day gathering that presents a multi-disciplinary approach to children’s literature, the conference will feature author Ralph Fletcher and artist Barry Moser.   Keynote address response groups, small-group sessions led by local humanities scholars and resource persons will offer opportunities for audience participation.  A humanities guide exploring specific issues related to the humanities values of children’s literature will also be explored, and reading discussions in public libraries and other sites outside the time and place of the conference are also planned.

The Dragon’s Gift: The Sacred Arts Of Bhutan (exhibition & public/education program series) 
(R-H-07C-06) This project will feature the first comprehensive exhibition of Bhutanese Buddhist art, an exhibition catalogue, and a public program series.  The public program series will include an interactive education exhibition, gallery guide, teacher workshops and resource materials, gallery tours and a free family Sunday program.

Holding Fast the Dream: Hawai‘i’s African-American Experience (documentary)
(R-L-07C-07) Production of a sixty-minute documentary exploring the African-American experience in Hawai‘i. The struggle by African-Americans over time to forge an identity and sense of community in Hawai‘i will be a particular focus. A viewer guide and public screenings and discussions are also planned.

When the Military Ruled: Military Rule in Hawai‘i 1941-1944 (multimedia)
(R-L-07C-08) An education and dialogue-based multimedia project keyed to the one-hour film “First Battle: The Battle for Equality in War-Time Hawai‘i” exploring constitutional rights and martial law.  A fifteen-minute short film, website and educational materials are to be developed.

Hawai‘i’s Forgotten Japanese Temples (documentary)
(R-L-07C-09) Production of a thirty-minute documentary exploring three defining episodes of the Japanese Buddhist experience in Hawai‘i, using the temples as a focus of Japanese community in Hawai‘i.
