Leadership
In 2004, Dr. Bob Buss became the Hawai‛i Council for the Humanities second executive director. The Council is guided by a 20-member board representing a wide spectrum of gender, ethnic origin and geographical representation. Also, it maintains a balance between the representatives of humanities disciplines and the general public, with approximately half the membership being local scholars in the humanities and the other half being leaders in the non-academic community throughout Hawaii. HCH employs 3 full time, and 3 part-time staff.
Mission
The Hawai‛i Council for the Humanities offers grants and humanities programs that creates educational opportunities which bring together humanities scholars and people from all walks of life to reflect, think critically, and actively exchange ideas.
Guided by its public humanities educational vision, the Hawai‛i Council for the Humanities encourages public dialogue that explores human values, interprets human experience, promotes cross-cultural understanding, strengthens our community and connects us to the wider world. The Council offers the state of Hawai‛i access to public programs such as the Motheread program and the Hawai‛i History Day program which is affiliated with National History Day. Other special programs include HCH’s partnership in bringing the Big Read program to Hawai‛i as well as Museum on Main Street’s Smithsonian traveling exhibitions which provide resources in the pursuit of building our community through the public humanities in our state.
